Growing up, I was very interested in all thing’s technology. There are aspects of my childhood that I still cherish to this day which I continue to encompass in my life. I really loved going to school and finding new ways to grow mentally as well as creatively. My experiences, family and friends have helped shape me in being the person that I am today.
Data science was something that intrigued me and led me to research career options. My interest began In the final years of high school where I studied Information Processing Technology. I really enjoyed that subject as I was introduced to new concepts that I have come to realise are the foundation of my career today. During my bachelor's degree, I heard a lot about data science and machine learning. It was something that intrigued me and led me to research career options. Upon discovery, I found out about studying a postgraduate degree in mathematics and statistics and the many career paths I could take.
I am passionate about finding things that can challenge me. I particularly enjoy experimenting with what I have learnt and applying it to small projects. As of right now, a passion of mine is web development. It includes all aspects of programming and design that I absolutely love.
I heard great things from people that studied here before me. Through research, I was able to find the ideal postgraduate degree that encompasses the skills and attributes that I wanted to gain upon completion.
A great experience I had during my studies was the opportunity to also work at UTS. A highlight was working as a workshop presenter and student ambassador to inspire and teach students about the importance and relevancy of STEM, which collectively reaffirmed my passions in life.
This degree really made me career-ready. In the early stages of my degree, all I wanted to learn was digital and analytical skills. But in addition to these, I also gained project management and communications skills, which helped improve my way of thinking and the value of constantly learning. I've been able to improve my resume to highlight my strengths and abilities as an individual.
I’m now working as a graduate data analyst consultant at KPMG, and my long-term goal in the future is to become a data scientist. I aim to achieve that by working on personal projects to develop a strong portfolio to ready myself in becoming a data scientist.
Studying a mathematics and statistics degree will challenge you to evaluate and analyse problems that are present in real-life situations. With such skills, you can successfully work in industries to improve business growth or make predictions about future events. A degree in mathematics and statistics will equip you with valuable life skills that can be applicable to any career.
A piece of key advice is to take opportunities presented to you to better yourself and discover what you are passionate about whether that be to build a network or take part in a beneficial initiative.
