Nursing and helping others, creates and strengthens bonds with people like no other experience.
I was born in Australia but grew up in a Vietnamese household with my parents and two younger brothers. I finished my HSC in 2016. I wanted to study nursing due to its fulfilling and rewarding nature, but what also interested me was the vast pathways I can take in the field, such as into nursing management, education, mental health, and more.
I am very passionate about helping others – that’s why I chose nursing! I am particularly passionate about helping homeless people, people with disabilities and the elderly, and have volunteered in these areas.
I chose to study at UTS because a campus in the city made me feel like I wasn’t still stuck in high school, but rather I feel free to control my learning and integrate it easily into my life. On top of this, the amount of placement hours required during the degree appealed to me, as well as the amount of student support services offered, such as HELPS, financial aid and legal aid.
I would say the most rewarding aspect of the course has been the life-long friends I have made along the way, as nursing and helping others, creates and strengthens bonds with people like no other experience.
During the past few years, I am amazed at how much I have grown as a person. I am more open-minded, empathetic and sympathetic, as I have met many different people from various backgrounds and this has expanded my worldview. I have also developed my communication and interpersonal skills, as well as my organisational skills.
When I graduate, I plan to go into mental health nursing and slowly work my way up into education as a Nurse Educator.
I would advise future students to make the most out of what UTS offers. Research the services provided to students, join a few clubs and societies and attend their events, but most importantly, try to have fun and make some friends!
