Blackboard FAQ
NOTE: Blackboard was turned off at UTS on September 1, 2021, and is no longer available.
This page will remain for reference purposes until November 1, 2021, and will then be removed.
Prior guidance for the Blackboard shut down was made available at Blackboard Download Guide and our Blackboard FAQs.
What's changing, when and what to expect
The decommissioning of Blackboard is the final step in the LX Transformation program which has overseen the move to Canvas, our new learning management system.
Students will no longer have access to Blackboard from the 1st of September 2021. Prior to this date, we are providing students with the opportunity to download any content currently stored in Blackboard that they don’t already have a copy of and wish to keep.
We have created a guide on how to download materials, however it is important to note that not everything is downloadable. Keep reading for some answers to some common student questions and where to go for more information.
How do I know what to keep?
It is your responsibility to decide what you would like to keep and to ensure you download these materials before September 1, 2021.
We know that many students save their materials as they progress through their subject. Therefore, you may not have a need to retrieve any content from Blackboard.
What should I do with my ePortfolio material?
If you have material you’d like to keep that is currently stored in the Blackboard ePortfolio tool, follow the instructions in the Blackboard download guide.
You can then decide to:
-
Store this material on your personal computer for personal use,
-
Store this material on your UTS OneDrive until you graduate, or,
-
If you’d like to showcase this material as a demonstration of your skills and achievements, you can upload it as a project to Portfolium. Portfolium is the new digital portfolio tool that all UTS students have access to. To get started, head to portfolium.uts.edu.au.
Why is UTS turning off Blackboard?
The decommissioning of Blackboard is the final step in the move to Canvas, our new learning management system. This move has been an important step in enhancing our online learning experience and feedback on Canvas has been overwhelmingly positive.
Canvas is a modern, intuitive platform where you can access all your subject learning materials, read and review your subject outlines, submit assessments, interact with peers and contact your subject coordinators or tutors.
By Spring session 2021, all subjects will be delivered in Canvas. That means Blackboard will no longer be in use and we do not to keep it switched on.
What do I do if I my subject site materials have been removed?
You might find that some subject content is no longer available. It is up to individual subject coordinators and teachers to decide how long after a semester concludes that subject materials will remain available.
Unfortunately, if this is the case you will not be able to access or download these subject materials. For this reason, we encourage you to download all subject materials throughout the semester to avoid disappointment.
Can I contact my subject coordinator for copy of materials?
Subject coordinators and teachers are not responsible for providing you with ongoing access to materials once you have completed a subject. If you are unable to locate materials from a previous subject this may be because of changes to access.
Is there a way I can view and download all my previous assessment feedback and grades?
There is no way to download these records as a file, however you will be able to view these in Blackboard. If you want to keep copies you can take screenshots or copy and paste the content into your own document. Instructions on how to access both assessments and grades are included in the Blackboard download guide.
If I am using a UTS storage site (e.g. OneDrive, Teams) will I still have access to this once I graduate?
When you leave or graduate from UTS, you’ll no longer be able to access some tools and systems including Teams and OneDrive. In these instances, you will receive an email stating that you’ll have up to 30 days to back up all your files from OneDrive before your account expires and is changed to an alumni account.
How will I be able to access apps and tools that I used to access via Blackboard?
Many apps and tools are already integrated into Canvas or accessible directly outside of Blackboard. However, some applications will either no longer be in use or are being replaced.
Some common apps, tools or systems that you previously may have accessed via Blackboard can be accessed directly using the links below:
Why can’t I download lecture recordings or videos?
Unfortunately, some file formats are not downloadable. This includes lecture recordings and videos. You will still be able to download lecture notes, presentations, readings, and any other PDF files following our Blackboard download guide.
I can’t log into Blackboard because I’ve forgotten my password.
If you haven’t accessed Blackboard or other UTS systems in a while, or if you’ve forgotten your UTS credentials, you may need to reset your password. Learn how to reset your password, and where to get help. Don’t forget to follow password security guidelines.
What do I do if I have an extension or internship for a subject in Blackboard?
If you are enrolled in an internship subject currently run in Blackboard and still need to submit work after September 2021, or if you have an extension for a subject in Blackboard that extends beyond September 2021, please contact your subject coordinator.
