Conference session descriptions

ASERA 2017 is designed to optimise constructive discussion about research in science education. In 2017 there will be two formats for presentations: papers and posters.

Paper presentation sessions

Oral paper presentation sessions will be allocated 40 minutes. This comprises 20 minutes for the paper presentation time and 20 minutes for questions and discussion time. Participants seeking to lead a paper presentation need to be able to engage the audience in 20 minutes of critical, but positive, conversation between themselves as the researcher and their audience. Please ask audience members to provide their email address if they want a copy of your paper so you can distribute it electronically after the presentation.

Poster presentations

Posters will be on display in a dedicated break out space. Researchers should prepare a poster (A0= 841mm x 1189mm, or A1= 594mm x 841mm) that details their research (questions, methodology, analysis and results) and a short introduction to the key ideas of their research. Details regarding poster presentations will be provided closer to the conference.

Call for papers and posters

To be considered for either an oral or poster presentation at the conference you need to submit an abstract of no more than 200 words. It is expected that the abstract will be relevant to science education research. All abstracts submitted will be refereed and applicants will be notified by email by the end of April 2017 if they are successful.

Abstract submission and format

Please submit all abstracts for paper and poster proposals to: asera2017@uts.edu.au with ASERA 2017 Abstract – first author’s surname in the subject line by Monday 3 April 2017.

Abstracts must be submitted in the following format for either a poster or paper presentations:

  • File Type: MS Word (.docx)
  • Font: Arial 12 point
  • Spacing: Single
  • Word Limit: No longer than 200 words

Abstracts must include the following:

  • Author(s) information: Author(s) name/s, Author(s) affiliation, & email addresses
  • Type of presentation: Identify whether a Poster or Paper presentation is proposed
  • Title of the presentation
  • Abstract: context, significance, research aim or question, methodology, findings or results (maximum 200 words)
  • Research students should include their supervisor’s name on their proposal so that presentation clashes can be avoided and supervisors are able to attend their student’s session.

Please submit your abstract as an email attachment to asera2017@uts.edu.au with ASERA 2017 Abstract – first author’s surname by Monday 3 April 2017.

Please note that you will be required to submit registration and payment by Friday 5 May 2017 as approved abstracts will only be included in the conference program if registration and payment have been received by this date.

Submission limit: There is a limit to the number of papers that an author may submit for presentation. Each author is allowed a maximum of one sole author session plus one co-authored session during the conference. Note that this is a maximum and presentation opportunities may be further limited when all abstracts are considered. Please note that the first author and presenter MUST be an ASERA member.

Equipment: Presentation rooms will have a lectern, PC laptop with PowerPoint installed and data projector. Please bring your PowerPoint presentation on a USB drive. For other hardware and software needs please bring your own laptop and adapters required to connect for presentations.

Full refereed papers

Occasionally some international delegates require full papers to be reviewed for funding and attendance purposes. Please submit your manuscript as an MS Word document, with evidence that a full paper review is required and email as an attachment to asera2017@uts.edu.au with ASERA 2017 Manuscript – first author’s surname by Monday 3 April 2017.

Manuscript format

Manuscripts are to be submitted in the following format:

  • File Type: MS Word (.docx)
  • Font: Arial 12 point
  • Spacing: Single
  • Word Limit: No longer than 5 pages including references.

Manuscripts must include the following:

  • Author information: author name/s, author/s affiliation, email addresses
  • Manuscript structure: Abstract (no longer than 200 words), Subject/Problem, Design/Procedure, Finding/Analysis, Contribution to Teaching and Learning Science, Interest to ASERA Members, References.
