What led you to choose UTS:Law for your studies?
So initially I was attracted to UTS from about Year 10 because of the excellent journalism course here. Once I started studying legal studies in Year 11, I realised I loved law and that it really suited both my personality and interests. It just so happened that UTS also has a great law school and so I got to enrol in two great degrees!
What is the most rewarding aspect of your degree? Why?
I find law fascinating, and particularly in studying Criminal Law this semester I’ve noticed how practical and useful the information is. It feels so satisfying to know I’m informed about really important topics, such as our justice system and police practice. I love being able to have engaging discussions with other friends about issues of law that allows me to express the new information I’ve learnt through these courses.
Are you involved in extra-curricular activities such as the Mentoring program, Brennan program, Mooting, LSS? How has this experience aided your career/personal development?
I love the LSS! Aside from all the great academic events and activities they run, a UTS Law party is second to none. Last year, as my first year, I got straight into the Brennan program and went to lots of the talks and speaker events they had, plus I participated in a Brennan discussion group, through which I had my mind opened to issues of inequality. I was also part of the junior buddy mentor program in my first year and am now a senior buddy this year. I’ve met so many wonderful people through law events, and through these activities, I’ve felt really comfortable and happy in my degree.
What would your advice be for someone who is looking at studying Law at UTS?
I cannot recommend UTS highly enough to anyone (and no one made me say this!) I think UTS Law is really establishing itself as a top Sydney program because of its fresh and innovative approach. Some of the other Sydney universities are too static and traditional in their approach and aren’t keeping up as the industry changes.
Is there anything else you’d like to add about your experience at UTS:Law, or the University as a whole?
I actually also live on campus, so if you are considering moving in, especially if you’re coming from another city like I did, come say hi!
