Plenty to reveal as Thomas St progress gains pace
June 2014
The Dr Chau Chak Wing Building is not the only one drawing attention with a ‘slow reveal’ of its façade. From Thomas St, the first section of the new Faculty of Science and Graduate School of Health Building’s façade can now be seen as scaffolding begins to come down.
The curved façade will have an off-white, ‘marble effect’ finish (see image below). The inside of the window frames will be painted in a variety of pastel colours, which will be visible from both inside and outside the building.
The scaffolding will be progressively removed as sections of the façade are completed. In July, the entire exterior of the building will be on show.

Snap it. Share it.
UTS staff, students and the local community have been busy snapping photos of the Dr Chau and FEIT Buildings and using the hashtag #UTSreveal to share them on social media.
As the Thomas St Building’s façade begins to be revealed, everyone is encouraged to use the same hashtag to help us document the unveiling of this state-of-the-art building.
Meanwhile, on the inside...
- Work has commenced to the lecture theatre (approximately 200 seats) on level 2
- Partitioning for individual offices on levels 4 and 5 is complete (carpet will be laid and furniture installed in August)
- Ceiling installation has commenced in the open plan area on Level 4.The ceiling will be perforated in these areas to help with acoustics
- Mosaic tiling in the Super Lab and in the light well (to Alumni Green) is almost complete
New seating transforms Alumni Green garden
Students and staff are celebrating after the timber seating was installed in the Garden earlier this month, creating a series of ‘garden pods’ that are ideal for socialising and relaxing as well as group work and study.
The pods will not be powered until October, at which time laptops and phones can be plugged in. Installation of lighting and the wifi network in the Garden is planned for the coming months.
Despite the cold change and recent rain, the pods have been very well received.
LRS – ready and waiting
The Library Retrieval System is just about complete and ready to be handed to the UTS Library, after the final floor was revealed. Fittingly, the floor features a multi-coloured, three-stripe pattern, reminiscent of RFID code and which reflects the library’s collection.
The first books will be loaded into the LRS at the start of July, with an initial load of 350,000 books being loaded in 10 days. Find out more here.
