Xi calls on Merkel to choose China over US

President Xi Jinping has asked Germany to work more closely with China as it seeks to divide America’s allies, including Australia, while shoring up a proposed European Union investment pact with Beijing.

In a telephone call with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday (Thursday AEST), Mr Xi called on the European Union to act “independently” in its negotiations with China.
