Australian consumers could benefit from cheaper Chinese imports displaced from the US if president-elect Donald Trump goes ahead with imposing steep tariffs on Chinese-made goods, according to one analyst.
But one fallout from a trade war could also be a loss of Chinese consumer confidence, which would affect recovering sales of Australian wine, lobster and beef – commodities that were effectively banned by Beijing when bilateral relations with Canberra plummeted from 2020, Australia-China Relations Institute director James Laurenceson said.
