China hits US farms in tariff fightback

Beijing/Canberra | A trade war between the world’s two biggest economies has officially erupted after Beijing hit back at the US with tit-for-tat tariffs, rocking markets and heightening fears of a global rush to protectionism.

Australian officials are monitoring the fallout, with concerns the tariffs on China could hurt its faltering economy and lead to a slowdown in demand for Australian commodities, such as iron ore.
