SYDNEY -- As "Fortress Australia" reopens to the world on Monday, welcoming back tourists for the first time in about two years, the gloves are coming off in domestic politics ahead of a fast-approaching election.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison's Liberal-National Party (LNP) coalition, which continues to trail in the polls, is attempting to play the China card by suggesting Beijing would prefer their Labor Party foes -- a strategy that has already shown signs of backfiring.
