We are not refugees

For the fourth year running a UTS journalism student has won the Media Super Student of the Year award presented by the Walkley Foundation for Journalism.

Lauren Day, one of five UTS graduands who this year secured a coveted cadetship with the ABC, won the award for her television feature story "We are not refugees" about rising sea levels and the effects of climate change on the people of Kiribati.

"We are not refugees" was Lauren's honours project, supervised by Professor Wendy Bacon and Senior Lecturer Tony Maniaty. She was also a finalist for the award last year for "Thin Ice", a television story on how the lives of traditional Sami reindeer herders in Norway's Arctic region were being affected by global warming.

Acknowledgement of Country

UTS acknowledges the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, the Boorooberongal people of the Dharug Nation, the Bidiagal people and the Gamaygal people, upon whose ancestral lands our university stands. We would also like to pay respect to the Elders both past and present, acknowledging them as the traditional custodians of knowledge for these lands.
