Undergraduate Bachelor of Communication transition arrangements (2022)

This information is for students who commenced from 2016 in the following courses:

  • Bachelor of Communication (all majors)
  • Bachelor of Communication (all majors) Bachelor of Arts in International Studies
  • Bachelor of Communication (all majors) Bachelor of Laws
  • Bachelor of Communication (all majors) Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation

What are the main changes?

  • From 2022, the School of Communication will be introducing a revised Bachelor of Communication suite of courses which will be offering a mix of 6cp and 8cp subject offerings.
  • The core subjects will remain the same as they are currently (3 x 8cp subjects).
  • In the new course version (from 2022), there will be 8 x 6cp subjects in each major.
  • Elective offerings will be mix of 6cp and 8cp subjects.
  • There will be change of names for some majors
    • Public Communication will change to Strategic Communication
(with no Public Relations and Advertising split)
    • Creative Writing will change to Writing and Publishing
  • There will be a new Media Business major. (This is not available for students admitted prior to Autumn 2022).
  • There will no longer be a requirement to meet criteria to continue on in your chosen second major. Students will continue in their chosen second major unless they decide to opt out to complete electives instead.

What does this mean for you as a current student?

  • We have made changes to ensure that you can remain in your current version of the Bachelor of Communication course but still benefit from the new changes. Therefore, you do not need to take any action. Your course code and course name will remain unchanged.
  • There is no change to core subjects – they remain the same.
  • Some of your current subjects have been phased out and will no longer be offered from 2022. They will be replaced by 6cp subject equivalents from the new course.
  • As the new major subject equivalents are 6cp subject offerings, we have created some 2cp subject offerings to ensure that you don’t have any shortfalls when completing your major. You may also be able to complete an additional 6cp major subject depending on where you are up to in your major.
  • You will have access to an updated list of elective options which includes some new subject offerings. Elective options will now include the first three subjects from each major (excluding Media Arts & Production).
